Rongai Route 7 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from Moshi or Arusha, followed by a scenic drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. After registration and meeting the full mountain crew, you begin trekking through cultivated farmland before entering the forest zone. The trail is gentle and peaceful, offering the possibility of spotting blue monkeys or colobus monkeys. You will reach Simba Camp in the late afternoon for a warm dinner and your first overnight stay under the stars on Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

Begin your day with a steady ascent through open moorland. The trail opens up with sweeping views of the northern slopes and the rugged Mawenzi peak. The landscape transitions into moorland shrubs, giant heathers, and volcanic formations. Upon arrival at Second Cave Camp, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, followed by light acclimatization walks and photography. Dinner and overnight at camp allow your body to adjust slowly.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Third Cave Camp

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the alpine desert zone, with views becoming more dramatic. The terrain becomes more rugged as you approach the high-altitude wilderness. Take in distant views of Kibo’s snow-capped summit while trekking across volcanic ridges and barren slopes. Arrive at the quieter Third Cave Camp in the afternoon, where you will enjoy lunch, rest, and an additional acclimatization walk. This day is essential for boosting your summit success rate.

Day 4: Third Cave Camp – Kibo Hut

After breakfast, begin the trek across the iconic Kibo–Mawenzi Saddle, a vast, moon-like arid desert that stretches between the two major volcanic cones. This surreal landscape offers some of the most panoramic vantage points on the entire mountain. The trail is gradual but long and dusty. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon for a hot meal and a crucial early rest. This is your base camp for the summit attempt, and your guides will brief you thoroughly on the climb to Uhuru Peak. Sleep early to prepare for the challenging night ahead.

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Your summit push begins around midnight. Using headlamps, you begin ascending steep scree and rocky switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Temperatures are freezing, and the air is thin, but the reward is great. After reaching the rim, continue along the snowy path to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Witness the sunrise over the glaciers and endless plains below — a moment you will never forget.

After photos and celebrations, descend back to Kibo Hut for rest and lunch. Continue your descent to Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night after an unforgettable 12–16 hour day of trekking.

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate & Transfer

Descend through diverse vegetation zones, from alpine desert to moorland and finally into the lush rainforest teeming with birdlife and monkeys. The trail is long but scenic. Arrive at Marangu Gate, where you will receive your official summit certificates. Your driver will transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, dinner, and well-deserved rest after your incredible achievement.
